Barbara was one of my mother's closest friends and, therefore, automatically became a trusted friend of mine. My mother's name is Lydia Johnstone. She first met Barbara and Ralph when we all lived in base housing at Fort Sam Houston, Texas San Antonio. Barbara hired mom to babysit Laurie and John once in a while, and my sister, Janice, and I would sometimes tag along. Laurie was closer to my age, so it was an easy friendship for me. Needless to say, Mom and Barbara soon became fast friends, lamenting over raising kids, supporting their husbands in their Army careers, holding each other up during the times the Army took their husbands to other lands, and sharing recipes. I still remember the divinity candy that Barbara used to make for us. That was the first time I had ever eaten that candy, and it still makes my mouth water thinking about it. She really did make the best divinity! I remember her calling Mom every so often and saying, "Lydia, let's meet at H.E.B. the grocery store, for those of you not from San Antonio, have a cup of coffee and talk. And don't forget to bring the spaghetti!" She loved mother's spaghetti! Barbara and Lydia's friendship lasted up to the day my mother passed away in August 1995. That's a long time! And testimony to a truly good person! God bless you, Barbara Wells, thank you for being Mother's friend and I hope He gives you a spot in heaven near Mom and Dad so you three can talk politics and keep a watchful eye over the family members still here on earth!! And, Barabara, if you think Mom made great spaghetti on earth, just wait 'til you taste it now. It's heavenly, I'm sure!!!

We all thought John was the luckiest kid because he had you for his Mom. Thank you for the ice cream at the Officers's Club Pool, for the trips to Henry's Fine Foods, and for the rides at the Boots and Saddles Club. The kids from Artillery Post will never forget you.

Alleluia! I first met Barbara Wells, nearly thirty years ago. I remember the meeting as if it were yesterday. There she was, a raven haired beauty- - - in a immaculate, starched, white, nurse?s uniform with her white nursing cap firmly in place. She was standing in the back yard of her new, old, un-restored home in the King William area, surveying the challenging opportunities ahead. I thought to myself, ?WOW ! This lady is in charge of the situation.? There are so many wonderful remembrances of wonderful times. Of gatherings of the King William Yacht Club, 
Of King William Fairs, 
Of small elegant dinner parties, 
Of just going out to eat. After her retirement, she rose to the elevated level of Chatelaine of the Castle, for each one?s home is their castle. Barbara had a intuitive, deep insight, not granted to many, of being able to see what the outcome of various actions would be. What an action would or would not produce. Barbara was generous and giving. She gave of herself. She could always be counted on in any emergency. For Barbara Cumming Wells, I say, To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die. You are in our hearts Barbara. Rest eternal grant unto Barbara, O Lord; 
and let light perpetual shine upon her.
