Bernice Metzler Engle

Bernice Metzler Engle passed away March 14, 2008, in San Antonio, Texas. Her children, Ed Engle of Manitou Springs, Colorado and Carolyn Engle Reyes and son-in-law Pat Reyes of San Antonio, Texas were at her side. Her daughter-in-law, Jana Rush, who had recently visited and cared for Bernice held her in her thoughts from afar.

Mrs. Engle was born February 14, 1921, in Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Millersville PA State Teachers College now Millersville University in 1943 with a degree in English and Library Science and later took additional library courses at Western Reserve University.

She was married in 1945 to Edison G. Engle, Jr. and moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1946. In 1950 she settled with her husband in Arlington, Virginia where she raised her family and worked as an elementary school librarian in the Arlington Public School system. She later moved to McLean, Virginia where she lived until her husband passed away in 1976. She then returned to Arlington County.

Bernice was an active member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Arlington where she was known for her generous spirit and as a willing volunteer. After retirement she served her community through numerous volunteer roles which included Meals-On-Wheels and teaching English as a second language. Bernice loved to travel and visited countries throughout the world.

Mrs. Engle moved to San Antonio in 2000 to be closer to her daughter. She was a member of MacArthur Park Lutheran Church and a faithful member of the Ladies Morning Bible Study group. She was a resident of the Inn at Los Patios Retirement Community where she had many friends.

The family would especially like to thank Pastor Paul Ziese, Pastor James Taylor, Odyssey Hospice and Bernice's caregivers Eartha Robinson and Alexis Dean. Above all things Mrs. Engle cherished her family and many friendships.

Interment will follow in Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania at a later date.
