She is survived by her children: Michael Grimes, Joe Grimes, and Kimberly Antillón (Byron); grandchildren: Michael Jr, Jessica, Isabel, Alyssa and Erica; her sister; two brothers and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bernice (Bennie) was born on August 28, 1932 at her home in Seguin, Texas, to Norberto and Isabel Benavides. She graduated from Seguin High School and being a bit of a woman before her time, moved on her own to San Antonio where she attended business school and began working in a secretarial position for civil service at Ft. Sam Houston. This is where she met her husband Jerry who was in the Army and they married in 1957. Her oldest son was born in Texas and shortly after they moved to San Francisco, CA on orders from the Army. For the next 20 years, she lived in San Francisco where her two other children were born. In the early 80s Bernice moved back to San Antonio and resumed her work with civil service at both Kelly and Lackland AFB. She retired from the Civil Service in 2000. After retirement she initially kept herself busy with volunteer work at the local elementary school and at both Santa Rosa and Methodist Hospital. After her 3 youngest granddaughters were born, she stayed busy spending time and helping with them.
Bennie was a quiet, funny, sarcastic, strong, loving and independent woman. She was easy to talk with and a wonderful listener who will be missed beyond words.
Visitation and services will be at St. Luke's Catholic Church located at 4603 Manitou, San Antonio, TX on Friday, June 28, 2019 beginning at 8:30 a.m. followed by a mass at 10:00 a.m.
