Bert H. Asmis, Jr., beloved son, brother, and uncle, passed away on October 15, 2026, at the age of 69 after complications arising from battling a long illness. Bert was a natural born photographer who could tell stories through film. Starting from a young age, he was fascinated with broadcast media and initiated his journalism pathway at UTEP. Soon after, he obtained his first media job in radio broadcasting at KPAS radio in El Paso, Texas in the late 1970's. From there, his career path turned to TV where his photojournalism career flourished; in the early 1980s he worked in TV as a news reporter and cameraman for KDBC-TV in El Paso. During the early 90's, he became a chief photographer at KENS-TV and KABB and was Special Projects photographer and editor at KSAT in San Antonio from 2004-2014. He had a passion and creative talent in technical and film editing for many years, both on a professional and personal level. He was awarded numerous accolades including Best Photographer of the year in 1998 by the Professional Organization of Mexican Americans in Communications. He retired early in 2015 due to increased difficulty living and performing his job with Parkinson's. Throughout his life, he enjoyed jogging, eating Mexican food, and watching football, especially the Dallas Cowboys, and always kept up with the daily news. Even though he had a quiet demeanor, he possessed a playfulness with his sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by many who knew him as a gentle soul. He is preceded in death by both his parents, Bertram Sr. and Paulina Asmis, his brother Caesar Asmis, and his beloved dog Willow. He is survived by his sister Jessica J. Asmis Carvajal (William), nephews Erik Carvajal, Caesar Asmis Jr. and niece Natalie Asmis. Memorial Services will be entrusted to Funeraria Del Angel Trevino, San Antonio, TX 78237 on Saturday, November 7 at 5:30pm. At a later date there will be a burial at Restlawn Cemetery in El Paso, Tx.
Special gratitude goes out to Stephen and staff with Pure Heart Hospice, as well as friends Brian Mylar and Jessica Saucedo for looking after Bert and lending him a helping hand.
