spirit's getting stronger. One of these days my
spirit will be so strong my body just won't be
able to hold it."
Miss Rosie Franklin
Our dear mother, Bertha Cuellar Gonzalez, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all, went to her next calling on January 16, 2017.
Mom was born in Floresville, Texas, to Lino Edward Cuellar and Francisca Flores Cuellar on November 21, 1917. In 1940 she married our father, Henry B. Gonzalez, and was a devoted wife and "Campaigner in Chief" until his death in 2000.
She was a loving mother to Henry Jr., Rose Mary, Charles, Bertha, Stephen, Genevieve, Frank and Anna. Her 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren were showered with attention which she bestowed with great tenderness and affection.
Mom sacrificed her own dreams so that we might achieve ours. She made our father's career possible; often referring to her as "his secret weapon" as he waged his numerous campaigns. Mom was not a mere bystander or witness during Dad's years in public service. Whatever our father accomplished in seeking a more just and fair society was a direct result of Mom's wise counsel and humanity. Every time someone expressed their thanks to our father for helping them out, they were unknowingly thanking our mother.
When our father died on November 28, 2000, we were quite worried about what would happen to Mom. We should not have been so concerned. She moved to Patriot Heights, where for the next 16 years she enjoyed a wonderful life with newfound friends. The entire Gonzalez family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents at Patriot Heights, past and present, for the welcoming and nurturing care they provided our mother through the years.
Mom is survived by her children, Henry Jr. (Deborah), Charles (Linda), Bertha (Terry), Stephen (Becky), Genevieve (Dick), Frank (Elisabeth) and Anna; 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; her beloved brother, Lino T. Cuellar; and numerous loving nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry B. Gonzalez; daughter, Rose Mary Gonzalez Ramos; and sisters, Clotilde "Coty" Taylor, Oralia "Lala" Froboese, Minerva "Neva" Reyes and Alice Blanche Simon.
