Beryl Agatha Johnson was born in the district of Meadsfield, Knockpatrick in the parish of Manchester, Jamaica on August 9, 1942. She was the 7th of 12 children born to May Jones and Lyndon Johnson. As a child, Beryl was quiet, caring, private, courageous, and adventurous.
Growing up in a socioeconomic challenged environment, Beryl strived for more for her daughter, herself, and family. In 1966 at the age of 22, she reluctantly left her daughter and ventured to the United States for a better life and opportunities. Upon her arrival she had many different jobs, but in the late sixties she obtained employment at the Hebrew Home for the Aged and became a certified nursing assistant. A job she did very well for 42 years, receiving many accolades and awards from her employers, co-workers, residents, and friends. Beryl gave her all to every task that she was assigned to.
In her pursuit of a better life for her and her family, she decided that she wanted to become an American citizen. It was not easy for her, but she studied hard and worked with her children to learn and understand American history. She was rewarded for her efforts and received her citizenship in 1982.
Beryl loved life and was always concerned about her family. It was demonstrated in her love of giving and sharing. She would always send things for her family in Jamaica, provided for her family in America, and lend a helping hand to friends and her fellow man. Beryl gave of herself without the expectation of thanks or gratitude. Her selfless efforts afforded opportunities for higher education and success for her family. Beryl also had a warm and infectious personality. She would greet everyone with a warm hello and a beautiful smile that touched the hearts of those she met. She did not complain when things were difficult or challenging, she trusted God to carry her through. She always said that she gives thanks to God for her health, strength, and ability to work every day. This is another one of her values that she instilled in her family.
Beryl wasn’t all work and no play; she understood the need for work life balance. She loved to travel. She visited Japan, Israel, Alaska, the Bahamas, and Canada to name a few. A true world traveler! Beryl also enjoyed long walks and the company of her friends and family.
Beryl was a loving, kind, thoughtful and thankful person. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Marvia, Dolores; 4 grandchildren: Sakina, Shaneka, Janay (Jesse), Jalan (Morgan); 3 great grandchildren: Jesse, Isaiah, London, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friend Helen and loving church family. Beryl, Mom, Grandmother, OGG (original great grandmother) will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
