Betty Cummings passed away on August 7th, 2021. Her absence will leave a hole in the hearts of family and friends. She is survived by her devoted husband Joe, loving daughters Lindsay Cummings and Katherine Cummings, her very special granddaughter Anabelle Cummings-Moore, and siblings Janie (Boyd) Caldwell, John (Sharon) Rainey, Bill (Kate) Rainey, Angelia (Chad) Wright, Jim (Stephanie) Rainey. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; Elbenia and William Rainey.
Betty was born in Clarksville, Texas on October 3rd, 1944. She was raised in Texarkana where she graduated from Texas Senior High School in 1963. Betty received her B.A and M.A in English from the University of North Texas. While working on her master’s degree at North Texas, she met the love of her life, Joe Cummings. They were joined together in marriage on August 21st, 1971. Joe’s jokes kept Betty laughing until her last days.
For over thirty years, she shared her passion for literature, art, and music with thousands of students. She spent twenty of those years at MacArthur High School and finished her career teaching creative writing at Reagan High School. Betty spent her life seeking the beauty in people and the world around her. She saw the Divine Spark of Creation in every wildflower, in every crook of old oak trees and in the rising of the sun each morning.
Her spirit didn’t come to an end with her death. Her memory will live on in the hills of Wimberly which she loved so much, in the hand-stitched quilts that she wrapped her children in, in the pages of antique books where her imagination roamed, and in the crackles of the season’s first fire around which she shared her love and laughter with family.
Betty could light up a room with a flash of her smile. The world will be a little dimmer without her. All things will be forever changed without her presence. To the woman who was loved by so many…. To the woman who can’t be replaced…. we love you dearly and hope that you are having a cup of coffee with your mama at last.
Betty’s memorial service will be held at Sunset Park and Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Highway on Friday, August 13, 2021, at 2 pm.
