Betty J. Dowdy

Betty J. Dowdy went to be with her Lord on August 18, 2010. She was born October 26, 1935 in Princeton, TX to John Edward Niell and Elizabeth Thomas Niell. Betty attended McKinney High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from North Texas State College in January 1958 and in December 1984, earned her Master’s degree from UTSA. She taught history in Lawton, OK and reading at Southside Middle School and Kreuger Middle School. On August 26, 1955, Betty married the love of her life, James Dowdy and during his military career, she traveled to many places. Betty loved to travel and loved to take cruises. She was very active at John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Windcrest. She also enjoyed gardening and was President of the Windcrest Garden Club. Betty leaves behind her loving husband, James R. Dowdy of San Antonio; daughter Emily E. Bee of San Antonio; daughter Cathy Jane Young of Corpus Christi; son, James R. Dowdy, Jr. of Austin and 5 grandchildren. A visitation for Betty will be held Monday, August 23, 2010 from 5PM to 7PM at Sunset Funeral Home. A graveside service will be Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 8:30AM at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at John Calvin Presbyterian Church at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to John Calvin Presbyterian Church.
