I wish to offer my sincere condolences to the family, particulary Mandy and Andy, the children of Betty Jean. Your mother and I were friends for a long time. You may remember me and my daughter, Jackie Rodriguez that attended the YMCA with you when you were both small. Jackie was a few years younger and I remember Betty always stating that you all "looked out after Jackie at the Y." Your mother and I first met when we attended a Hispanic Leadership training sponsored by MALDEF back in the eighties when we were both aspiring leaders. We then worked at the jail at the same time, but in different departments. Then we lost track until I ran into Betty again in Austin, when she went to work for TDCJ and I was teaching at St. Edward's University. We had both left San Antonio to take advantage of new opportunities. I would also run into Betty Jean at our local workout place in South Austin, Premier Lady. Years earlier when we were both still in San Antonio, I would see your mom at a local workout on the corner of Military and S. Flores. She was one of the few people like myself that always took very good care of herself. When in Austin, we would talk about leaving Austin to come home. I guess she moved back before I did as its been about three to four years since I had seen her. Today, I found out she died through mutual friend of ours that still works at the jail. I was truly shocked. Recently, I was thinking about Betty and wondering what she was up to and how I wish I knew how to get ahold of her. I am sorry this did not happen. Your mother was a treasure, intelligent, hardworking, committed, caring and she will be missed. I am truly sorry for your loss, but know many of us out here thought the world of her. My deepest sympathy to the family and I will keep her eternally in my prayers.

My sister Betty Jean was such a beautiful person both inside and out.She was so humble,genorous,and full of love for eveyone.She was such a brilliant person so very smart.I will always remember her beautiful smile. I will miss her so very dearly and she will be in my heart forever.

I just got back into town today and found out about Betty's passing! What a wonderful woman, your mother was, I was so fond of her. I knew her because you Andy and Mandy were friends with my son Sammy. Remember the lemonade stand you all set up when we were cleaning the neighborhood? So long ago, but wonderful memories. Your mom rests in peace is in the hands of the Lord, most likely at the head of the table. God Bless you!

Ms Betty Jean was such an inspiration to me & my mom. I had the privilege of meeting Ms. Betty Jean at Patriot Hts .My 88 yr old mom with a painful fx pelvis was her roommate for 3 wks. I enjoyed greeting her daily as I visited my mom each day..she would always smile,she was proud of her career,her family pictures. Her room was decorated so 'homey.' She was content,we watched the summer olympics at the same time ,I observed as she was treated with loving care by the staff..she was loved by many and seemed to have a rich life. I was so sorry to hear about the passing of BJ, as we used to call her. She was a nice person. I met her while she was working at the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. We became good friends and kept in touch, even when she moved to Austin. I will always remember her beautiful smile and her kindness. She was always willing to help anyone who needed help.
