Betty Lain Lancaster, born November 3rd, 1931 to Thomas and Velma Lain of Galveston, passed away Monday, May 13, 2013. Betty is survived by her three sons and two daughters-in-law, Howard, Scott and Mary, John and Elizabeth, and by her grandson, Flynn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Jr., on April 13, 2013, and her three brothers, Thomas Jr., Bill and Ed.
Betty was born in Galveston and was always a proud "BOI" (Born on the Island). She attended the Hockaday School for girls in Dallas and the University of Texas at Austin. After college, she moved back to Galveston where her secretarial job with Titus Harris led to her meeting her future husband, Howard Lancaster, Jr. Howard graduated from the UT Medical Branch in Galveston and they were married on June 4, 1955, the day after Howard's graduation.
Betty and Howard remained in Galveston for the next 5 years, where son Howard III was born. Betty announced that from that day forward she wanted to devote her time and heart to being a mother. After moving to San Antonio in 1960, where sons Scott and John were born, Betty stayed true to her conviction. She raised, nurtured, guided and loved her three sons throughout her life.
Our memories of our mom are precious and too many to recount, but, simply, we remember her for her kindness, her gentleness, her loving heart.and for the person she was. A quick wit. A superb cook. An avid reader. A clever puzzle solver. An enthusiastic traveler. A beautiful pianist. A strong role model. A loyal friend. And, a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, whose sons, their wives and her grandson will forever love and miss.
A memorial service will be held for Betty at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the Porter Loring Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Northeast Seniors Assistance (2903 Nacogdoches Rd, San Antonio 78217) or to a charity of your choice.
