She was born on November 27, 1928 to Christopher and Lillian Barnard in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
She was proceeded in death by her husband, William Ernest Shelton and her son, William Skidmore Shelton.
As a young war bride, Betty enjoyed an exciting, and colorful international life with her beloved husband, and air force fighter pilot often referred to as “Wild Bill”.
Betty had a bright, happy and positive disposition and she brought sunshine to any room she entered. That light emanated from within and blessed all who knew her. She was generous of spirit and possessed a strong faith in her Lord and her fellow human beings. She had a happy heart. Her husband lovingly referred to her as “the world’s oldest teenager”.
She expressed an innate curiosity about people and the world around her, which compelled her search for learning and new adventures.
She loved travel, nature, animals, bright colors, art, music, beauty, and making others happy.
She was a prolific volunteer and a natural leader from her youth forward throughout her life. She was a consummate cook and hostess and her many beautiful homes were filled with happy, loving friends. No one ever declined an invitation to Betty’s parties—they were legendary! The welcome mat was always at her door and holiday tables were filled with an eclectic assortment of friends, family and those who had no table of their own.
She was a loving wife, mother of three and peerless supporter of her husband’s military career and subsequent businesses. She made lemons out of lemonade as she moved her family across the globe in seamless efficiency while keeping the home fires burning.
Her friends heard her say so many times, “I got everything I wanted in life…….I’ve been everywhere, I’ve done it all, and I loved every minute of it”.
Her passing has left an empty place on our hearts. She touched so many lives and she will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Thomajan and Pamela Sue Stewart, and her grandchildren Stuart Thomajan, Craig Thomajan, Edward Thomajan and Harper Shelton.
The memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon, Thursday, April 26th, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, with a reception to follow 1-3PM.
Flowers may be sent to Sunset Funeral Home.
