Betty Cornell Storrs

On September 25, 2023, Church of Reconciliation founding member Betty C. Storrs entered eternal life with our Lord Jesus Christ. Betty is survived by her two daughters Pamela Ann Kasper and Sharon Marie Storrs Gore, her sons-in-law Dennis Kasper and Ed Gore, and her three Granddaughters and their husbands: Kristin and Evan Pipkin, Kim and Ryan Pederson, and Jennifer and Brent Alsobrooks. Betty was blessed to celebrate life for years with her seven great-grandchildren, Charlie, Eli, and Evan Pipkin, Taylor and Luke Pederson, and Mason and Nolan Alsobrooks.

Betty was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 29, 1925, and was the daughter of Elwood North and Ella Jane Cornell. Betty was raised in a Christ-centered family who reached out to help others in their community. A favorite at Hempstead High School, she was voted “Best Dressed,” studied at Carnegie Hall to become an Opera singer, and loved all music. She married Bud on September 14, 1946, at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Hempstead, Long Island, New York. Always the dutiful wife, she loved that Bud served his country in WWII in the South Pacific as a B-25 pilot followed by serving in the Korean War. She was a leader and respected member of the Air Force Officers’ Wives Association during the 28 years Bud was in the Air Force. She always provided a loving and beautiful home while raising her daughters traveling around the world in Nouasser AFB in Casablanca, Morrocco, Brookley AFB in Mobile, Alabama, Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Scott AFB in Mascoutah, Illinois, and Howard AFB in Panama, Canal Zone.

Betty, with her beloved Bud, were members of the founding group who established the Episcopal Church of Reconciliation on Starcrest Drive. Always singing in the choir (soprano) she was extremely active in the church for 43 years and was recognized by the Diocese of West Texas as a “Distinguished Woman of Reconciliation,” for which she was humbled and most thankful. Her love of prayer led her to be an Intercessory Prayer Partner for over 35 years, was blessed by being an active Bible Study student, and served as an Office Angel doing anything and everything the staff needed. She was an example of unselfish service, always bringing light to any task.

A love for animals guided her to be a Docent at the San Antonio Zoo taking animals to schools and sharing amazing stories at the dinner table about her adventures. Being an active member of the San Antonio Assistance League enriched her life following their mission, which was always to reach out to those in need. One of the fondest memories we grew up with was watching Mom being a member of the San Antonio Conservation Society during NIOSA with her festive hats at the fruit booth singing and sharing the light and love of Christ. She truly lived the word of God each day with grace, humor, beauty, and compassion.

Always opening their home on Christmas Eve for over 70 years, Betty and Bud welcomed hundreds of friends who became family. It was a tradition to sing Christmas carols and hand out candy canes. Over the years we witnessed people who had never met before returning as friends. The warmth of the “Season” did not end with the celebration of Jesus, it continued each month through the years giving back each and every day.

Betty loved reading the Bible every night, watching her Grandchildren grow up with beauty, intelligence, and grace. She was blessed to know and watch her Great-grandchildren snow ski, learn how to drive a snow-sled with dogs, play T-Ball & baseball, build sandcastles at the beach, and always relished the family tradition of baking Christmas cookies. What a gift God gave Betty to be surrounded by her family as she celebrated each achievement each child attained thanking our Lord for their health, their loving parents, and their futures.

Betty was given a pillow from a dear friend that said, “YOU are the friend everyone wants to have.” She was that gift to every person she was with. We rejoice in her rebirth into Heaven and know she is smiling with Bud sending blessings to each of you. “Matthew 25:23, “Well done, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over may things: enter into the joy of the Lord.” Mom, you were the genuine example for all of us, “Do everything without complaining or arguing.” Paul writes, “so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault…you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life.” Philippians 2: 15-15. We love you Mom, and we will see you in Heaven.
