Billy Joe Barker passed away peacefully in his home of over 50 years, with his wife Margie by his side. Margie and Bill met at Sam Houston State where each was the first in their families to attend college. They married in 1957 and never parted for more than a few nights.
Billy Joe was born in George, Texas and had a rambunctious childhood as he grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. Roaming the East Texas landscape, he developed a love of hunting, hiking and outdoorsmanship that stayed with him his entire life. Bill and Margie moved to Helotes, Texas with their two sons in 1967, where he worked for the University of Texas Health Science Center until he retired in 1999, earning the position of Vice President Emeritus after many years of operating the Budget, Finance and Personnel Departments. Bill worked tirelessly for the Helotes community. There was never a time when he was not active in either the Helotes Festival Association, the Boy Scouts, or the Helotes Lions Club, where he served in many capacities such as President or Treasurer for over 50 years. Bill was inducted into the Lions Club Hall of Fame in 2013. Bill had a kind soul and was loved by everyone who met him. He was the type of man who laughed easily, took his responsibilities seriously, and was always willing to volunteer to help wherever he was needed. He will be missed by all of us. Bill was proceeded in death by his grandson Nathaniel Barker. He is survived by his loving wife, Margie Barker, his son Dean Barker and his wife Breanda, his son Don Barker and wife Elenita Ravicz, his nephew Brian Barker and wife Lynette, his nephew Bobby Singletary and his wife Linda, his niece Kathi Cunningham, his niece Pam Wolfert and her wife Collette, his nephew Bruce Wolfert, his niece Linda Wolfert, and a host of close friends that are too numerous to count. We wish to specifically thank his caregivers: Maria Gonzalez, Jackie Zamora, Nichole Brown, Barbara Plunkett, and our close family friend Sandra Goodson.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Boy Scouts of America.
A Remembrance will be held for Bill on March 16, 2024, from 11:30am to 2:30pm at the residence of Don Barker & Elenita Ravicz: 316 W. Mulberry Ave., San Antonio, TX 78212.
