Bob was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Ann Montgomery (nee Awbrey); daughters, Nancy Carol Montgomery of Richardson, Texas, and Patricia Montgomery Otto and husband, Jeff D. Otto, of Austin, Texas; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara and Jack Hardage; and his dear nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephew in whom he delighted. His older sister, Billie Montgomery, died of pneumonia in her youth.
Bob was born near Iredell, Texas, and grew up in rural Texas. He was an excellent student and athlete, playing quarterback for the Iredell High School Dragons. After graduating from high school, Bob enlisted in the military where he served as a medic in the Army Air Corps until 1949. After his honorable discharge, he enrolled at Baylor University and received his B.B.A in Accounting in 1952.
He worked as an accountant for Ernst & Young until he sat for his CPA exam in 1960. He was recruited as a CPA by a San Antonio accounting firm, Chorpening Jungmann, CPAs, and quickly became a partner. He later joined Padgett Stratemann & Co. where he formed the small bank auditing practice of the firm. In that capacity, he represented small banks before regulatory agencies, provided expert witness testimony on financial transaction matters and bond claim investigations, and advised many institutions during troubled bank workouts. During his career, he was a board member and president of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants and elected president of the San Antonio Chapter of that organization. He was member of the Banking Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants as well as a member of the Texas Bankers Association and the Independent Bankers of Texas.
Bob was so proud that both of his daughters followed his footsteps to Waco, Texas, and graduated from Baylor University. Together, the family followed the Baylor Bears, cheering on the football team and the men and women's basketball teams to many exciting victories. In addition to being a Baylor Bears fan, Bob enthusiastically followed the San Antonio Spurs.
In retirement, Bob enjoyed many of the simple things in life, including spending time with his many friends, cooking up a great breakfast, playing practical jokes on his wife and daughters, and playing the tormenting game of golf. He also spent many an hour in his beloved woodshop, creating all manner of furniture and art. He also enjoyed western movies, in particular John Wayne movies, and country music.
Bob was a man with a good heart who enjoyed helping people. He was an active member and board member of the San Antonio Downtown Optimists and took particular joy in working in the Christmas tree lot during the organization's annual benefit sale. He was a board member of both the San Antonio Association for the Blind and the Housing and Services division of Wedge Management, providing safe, high-quality, affordable housing with support services to those in need. He also volunteered for the San Antonio Cancer Society, providing transportation for cancer patients.
Bob previously attended both Jefferson Church of Christ and Sunset Ridge Church of Christ and was an active, longstanding member of Oak Hills Church-Crownridge when he passed.
