Today it has been a decade that we have continued to live without you. It has been so very difficult, more so than you ever considered. I am sure you believed in your mind that I would be better off without you, that I would move on. There is no moving on Brenby, there is learning to cope, learning to live again in an uglier world...but we don't move on, we simply have to learn to live with the pain. I miss you. I still think of you so often it hurts. I am still guilty for what I did, and what I didn't do. I am still waiting for forgiveness; I don't think it is anywhere in sight. Such a long road we travel, I am not sure I took the right path. I know you did not, but I think you still ended up in a better place than I. Such secrets we had, you and I. Now there is no one left to share them with, no one to confess them to. I love you, and I wish love had been enough.

I look back on these tributes, and it does nothing else than take me back to everything. That moment I lost you. All these people have all these stories and memories to share about you, when truthfully no one knew you, like i did. Your kindness traveled way further than anyone could ever comprehend. You were my backbone, my reliance, i needed you to be here. In April it will be six years now, six years you have missed out on everything here. I know you're watching me from heaven, so there isn't much i can tell you, that you don't already know but if there is one thing that always remains true, is that i live my life everyday for you just because you didn't get to. I've been making some wrong choices in my life recently, i'm not too proud of them, and i'm pretty sure you wouldn't be either but i'm changing i'm straying towards a path you will be much more proud of. I think about you everyday, something always comes up, or something will happen that makes me think of you. I bet you would be gorgeous, you already were! And of course you would still be my hero, my knight in shining armor who was always there to protect me. I'm sorry i don't go see you as much anymore. I took my best friend out there recently, it's just so hard. I want you to be here with me. Just remember that even though i think you've made some wrong decisions i still love you more than absolutely anything. I hope heaven is a much better view; know i look up there for you all the time. I love you Brendan James.

I've been waiting to do this, hoping something profound will come to me . . . it hasn't. Brendan--we're going to miss you so much. English won't be the same without your hi-tech presentations and speedy vocab quizes, much less orchestra. When we played at your confirmation I know you heard us. It was beautiful and every note was directed towards you. And to the Laughlins--I know y'all have heard this more than once, but hopefully every time it means something; y'all are in our thoughts and prayers constantly. It is an incredible loss for everyone but mostly for you. May God give you the strength to carry on.

I've been waiting for a good time to post my sympathies and I suppose that now is as good a time as any. The pain will never stop, for me and for many, many others, but I do know how much good that Brendan left for all of us. I always deeply empathized with Brendan- for some reasons that I, myself, cannot explain; that empathy is in the past now- thank you Brendan. Thank you for being so kind, so special, for being someone that I will never forget. Thank you for being! I'll celebrate your life no matter how much I miss you.

Dear Laughlin Family, Brendan and I shared the same Birthday July 6, and he died on my late husband's David's Birthday April 7. My parents are parishoners at Holy Spirit. My niece is Patricia Drew, she was Brendan's stand partner in Orchestra at Churchill, she has a broken heart. We all do for you and for him. When someone we love dies there is always something we wish we could have done with and for them when they are gone, and it's too late, but we can turn again to life at smile and do something to comfort other hearts that are broken. There is nothing I can say right now that will soothe your aching heart, but I pray that your memories and your faith will sustain you when your pain becomes too great to bear. In the last two years I have found consolation for my pain volunteering my time and talents at The Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas. It has been very healing to witness children heal each other, and now I know that the heart is stronger at the mended places. My hope and prayer for all of you is that you will know peace, and joy again. God Bless all of you.

My daughter, Jordan, became friends with Brendan in a class last year at Churchill. I was shocked and saddened when Jordan told me last week that Brendan had died. She talked about him as being such a good person, and I know your hearts must be broken over this terrible tragedy. Please know that your entire family will continue to be in my daily prayers as you struggle to deal with this devasting loss. All of Brendan's friends will certainly miss him...

I knew Brendan from Church and after I found out about his death I wrote a poem that is dedicated to him... ~To Brendan~ So sweet and kind,

But we talked sometimes at church. 
He seemed so happy,

I did not know Brendan but I was drawn to his beautiful smile as I glanced through the newspaper the other day. I have thought about him and your family so much in the last few days. I lost my daugter Julie 4 years ago on May 11 from a heart attack. She was only 20. It is not easy going through this but I do know that time does help us to cope with it a little better. I too am a teacher and the smiles of the children help me each day. I find it helpful to keep a ring and a necklace that belonged to Julie with me at all times. It helps me feel close to her. She is also buried at Mission North. I pray that God will give all of you the strength and comfort that you need and please know that I would be more than happy to sit and talk and share wonderful memories about our children together if you need a friend and when you feel ready to do so. I would always nag him about his really wave hair which was just like mine and I had been trying to teach him how to keep it from waving. It was also great fun accompanying him for his UIL solo piece, and Eric must remember it, too, because he would demonstrate for Brendan how the piece was supposed to go, artistically, having played it himself as well. Brendan had such a wonderful outlook on life and it was such a horrible thing for me and I can't even comprehend what it must have been like for you when I discovered that he was gone. I was a peer and classmate of Brendan for only a couple of years. During that time, he radiated a never-failing positive attidude, bringing smiles to those around him and those who knew him well. He was an outright genius in all academic areas, with involvement in many extra-curricular activites. His friends were numerous and we will all miss him deeply. But down in all of our hearts, and inside of our minds, his spirit will live on in the vivid, memories that we shared with him. I pray that everyone's hearts are consoled at the thought of knowing that he is in a much better place.

Brendan always mde me laugh. He was cheerful every day and could make a joke out of almost everything. At lunch and in class he made everyone laugh and we had a good time. Ben, Brendan, and I would always quote Monty Python at lunch. We had many fun times together and it is very sad that he is gone. Ben and I don't know what we will do at lunch now. Brendan will always hold a special place in my heart.

I didnt know Brendan, but during my sixth grade year at Eisenhower M.S. I remember seeing him in the hall way. Of course I never actually had a conversation with him because he was in 8th grade and I only in 6th. I heard about your loss and I am very sorry. I dont really know what happend exactly because rumors have been kind of circulating. I wish there was something I could have done to prevent this myself and I understand nothing that i say can make up for your loss. You are probably sick of hearing this, but just know that he is in a better place now, and that things do happen for a reason. This all fits into one big plan that may not make sense now, but it will someday.

These past couple of days have been so tedious, and I can never imagine how hard they must be for your entire family. Know that we are praying for you everyday, remember that God is right there and all you have to do is rely on him and he WILL get you through this. I also know that Brendan was one of the best individuals that I have ever known. All of us love him dearly, and the memory of his sweet smiLing face will live on forever in our hearts. I sat right next to him every other day. I was his stand partner for the last two years. There's probably so much I forgot to say. Now his chair is only soaked in tears. Did he have a broken heart, or was it pain or strife? I don't think I'll ever understand how he could take his own life. I'll count him absent and set out his chair from now on. I remember your jokes and big smile. How come I haven't seen you in a while? All of a sudden, you feel like such a stranger. I'll see you at practice later. Oh my God, please be a dream. This cannot be real. Give him back. Let's make a deal. Your face never showed you were running out of time. Everything could've been just fine. Life, hope, pain, trust, faith, guilt, love, lust. This world can sometimes be cold, but you gotta' suck it up. Don't isolate yourself from the ones who care, or the ones who you think don't. Once you die and leave me here to cry, I can't bring you back to life. It's not fair that you left like this without saying goodbye. What could I have done? Death is not the answer but you never knew you could talk to me. It's too late now, but listen, I'm always free. Some say it's how you role the dice, but I don't think life's a game. Some aren't very nice; somethings never change. Was it something you were trying to prove? Because your company hurt alot to loose. Was something bothering you for a while? What were you thinking those last few miles? How did you hide it so well? I'll never know; You'll never tell. I couldn't think of anything- pain or strife -that 
justifies you taking your own life. This empty chair torments me, because I can still see you, I can still hear you... God bless the Laughlin family.

Looking at Brendan's picture made me cry once again for that is exactly how I think of him--a smiling, handsome, kind young man. I never saw Brendan be anything but sweet and cheerful. His life touched so many people and his death has been a tragedy for more people than you can ever imagine. This week, all I've heard is what a wonderful young man he was. I can't begin to imagine thet pain that you are feeling but as a parent I do know that you will question yourselves. I want you to know that I've worked with thousands of families and you two had created one of the most loving families I've ever seen. Without a doubt, I know that Brendan knew that he was loved unconditionally--do not question yourselves on this. I have heard you say a million times that your children come first. Life is so complex that sometimes even this is not enough, but it is all we can really give our kids. My heart is so full from the pain that it is hard to keep my thoughts straight and to say all the things I want to say. Just know that ,I along with with hundreds of people are feeling only love and sorrow for you, your family, and Brendan. Sometimes unexplainably horrible things happen to good people, and it seems almost impossible to accept. I have the uptmost respect for you and your family. I remember Brendan best when he attended Oak Meadow Elementary with our daughter, Katie. It seems like only yesterday....they were laughing and playing in their classroom at school parties. Richard and Family - I was deeply sadened to learn of you son's death. Realizing that I can't even begin to know what you are going through - I hope knowing that we are praying for you can bring you some comfort during this difficult time.

I was reading the obituaries and I saw Brendan's name. I used to go to Churchill High School. I graduated in 2002 just last June. I want to pay my respects to Brendan and his family.Unfortunatly, I did not know Brendan, but he went to Churchill and Churchill was my high school. I am very sorry for the lost of your loved one. Keep your spirits up high and know that Brendan will always be watching over everyone. He is in a better place now. His soul is with God. I hope you and the whole family will be able to handle his death the best way you can. Once again, I am very sorry for your loss.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Monica taught my daughter, Taylor Smith, when my daughter was in kindergarten. Taylor wanted me to let you know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. In Taylor's prayers last night, she asked her guardian angel to go be with you and comfort you. We will make a donation in memory of your son to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Please accept our deepest sympathy. You will continue to be in our prayers.

I am so sorry for your loss. I didn't know Brendan, however, after having Brittany this year and hearing her talk about him, I felt like I did. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through, but I wanted to let you know that you all are in my thoughts and in my prayers.

A combination of faith in God and time will help you to accept and cope with the incredible sense of loss and emptiness which you must be feeling. Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin, 
I got to know Brendan as an 8th grader working with the PAL program. The counselors really relied on Brendan and Colin Willauer to do a lot of our student mediations. They did a great job and were always dependable. I really enjoyed working with them and remember many times seeing Brendan and Colin walking together down the Eisenhower halls, laughing and joking around. 
I am deeply saddened by the loss of this fine, young man. Please know our thoughts are with your family.
