Bryan Stuart McGinnis, age 63, passed away on Monday, July 4, 2016 in San Antonio, TX. He died suddenly of heart failure and left his family shocked. He was born in Valdosta, GA on October 20, 1952 while his parents, Roy and Carol Grubb McGinnis were stationed at Moody Air Force base.
Bryan is survived by his parents, brother, Ronald "Ron" McGinnis and his children, Zachary McGinnis, Dana Lorez McGinnis, and Jack McGinnis; brother, Dana McGinnis and his wife, Myriam of San Antonio and their children, Julie McGinnis Flanagan and her husband, Brian of New York City, and Timothy Sean McGinnis of San Antonio; and brother, Leslie Kirk McGinnis of San Jose, CA.
Because of his father's duties, Bryan moved around in his early years, living in Las Vegas, NV, Del Mar, CA, and Eureka, CA before settling in San Antonio in 1961. Even as a child he was highly intelligent, and always earned extremely high (though sometimes erratic) marks in school. As he grew older, he also turned out to be a fine athlete. At Robert E. Lee High School, from which he graduated in 1970, he was a member of that year's excellent State finalist football team and ran the 800 yard run event on the track team, posting a fine 2 minutes flat time. He went on to Tulane University, at first studying mathematics, but losing interest after two years, he switched to the Spanish department, made up courses and went to Spain for his junior year abroad. True to form, he excelled in the language, traveled around Europe, taught himself French and some German, and joined a Madrid soccer club. The "American" turned out to be a star wing who led the team to a league title.
After college, he began working for his father's construction company, where he decided he needed an engineering degree after all. He returned to school at UT Austin for a master's degree in engineering, and returned to help his father. Together, they succeeded doing highly specialized and technical work for the U.S. Military and other Government agencies. Bryan eventually grew restless, dissolved the business and returned again to the University of Texas to earn an Executive MBA degree, graduating in 2008. His heart must not have been in it though, and as he entered retirement he maintained a mostly quiet and private life.
The Lord took him last week. His family will miss him. God bless him and may he rest in peace!
