

Carl L. Blum, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 95. Born on January 19, 1929, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, to Ralph R. Blum and Alice Gertrude Baumgardner. Carl’s life was marked by service, laughter, and unwavering faith.
Carl graduated from Hickory Township High School in 1946, and immediately thereafter, he answered the call of duty by joining the United States Marine Corps. His military career was distinguished and took him across the globe, serving in the United States, Korea, Japan, and aboard numerous aircraft carriers. After a commendable 33 years of service, Carl retired from the Marine Corps in 1979, carrying with him the discipline and leadership skills that would define his second career.
Post-military, Carl seamlessly transitioned into the civilian workforce, taking on managerial roles at Radio Shack before dedicating many years to H-E-B, where his friendly demeanor and sharp wit were appreciated by both colleagues and customers alike.
Carl’s commitment to his community was as steadfast as his dedication to his country, A proud and active member of the Texas Masonic Lodge #8, he served as Master in 1991-1992. His Masonic journey did not end there, as he was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Alzafar Shrine in San Antonio. His service extended to being a life member of the VFW Post 8541 and American Legion Post 336, where his presence was a testament to his enduring camaraderie and support for fellow veterans.
Those who knew Carl will remember him as a man of humor, faith, and friendliness. His ability to light up a room with a joke, offer wisdom in times of need, and extend a helping hand to a friend was unparalleled. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through challenges and inspiring those around him.
Carl’s family was the heart of his world. He was a devoted husband to his wife of over 50 years, Elva Lee Blum, who passed before him. Together, they raised a family that would be his pride and joy. He is survived by his loving daughter, Linda L. Flores and her husband, Ernest; his granddaughter, Amber L. Flores; his grandsons, Edmund A. Allaire III and wife, Jeanette, Curtis C. Allaire, Justin T. Flores and wife, Emilie. Carl was also a doting great-grandfather to Piper J. Spenrath, Edmund Allaire IV, Ayson T. Spenrath, and Everette Allaire, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and integrity.
Carl was preceded in death by his daughter, Debora A. Allaire, who no doubt welcomed him with open arms on his journey to the next life. Carl L. Blum lived a life that was full and meaningful. His passing leaves a void in the lives of those who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the enduring impact he has made on all our lives. Carl’s story is one of love, service, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of his community and country. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be a beacon of light for those who had the privilege to know him.
