Carlos Alberto Macedo was born July 1, 1943, in Curitiba, Parana-Brazil and passed away at the age of 81 on April 15, 2025 in San Antonio, Texas. Also known as “Vovo” by his grandchildren – grandpa in Portuguese.
He went to medical school in Curitiba, Brazil and completed his residency in Chicago, Illinois in Psychiatry at Michael Reese Hospital and Northwestern University. He then moved to San Antonio in 1979 with his family to begin a career in child psychiatry caring for hundreds of children for over 44 years.
Carlos’ greatest love was his family and is survived by Polly Macedo, his beloved wife of 53 years; son, Marlos Macedo and daughter-in-law, Amanda Macedo; daughter, Melanie Macedo Flinn and son-in-law Toby Flinn; his 6 loving grandkids: Lucas Flinn (18 years old); Mazen Macedo (16 years old); Sage Flinn (16 years old); Max Macedo (14 years old); Roman Flinn (13 years old); Evangeline Flinn (11 years old); sister, Marisa Braga; niece, Vanessa Braga; nephew, Afonso Braga; nephew, Alcindo Braga, and cousins and friends in Brazil.
Carlos was the recipient of a heart transplant on November 20, 2002, an immense gift for which he was truly grateful. His new heart allowed him to live an additional 22 years to experience the weddings of both his children and to be involved in the lives of all six of his grandchildren.
Carlos’ passions were reading, education, articles and topics related to medicine, literature and current events. He thoroughly enjoyed and looked forward to his monthly lunch meetings with his psychiatrist friends and co-workers. Classical music, Brazilian music, soccer, good food and nature walks were a few hobbies he enjoyed.
Carlos’ honesty, humility, generosity, dry humor and wise words were ever present, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His memory will forever be in our hearts.
Per Carlos’ request, there will be a private family service.
