

He attained his Medical Degree from the University of Nuevo Leon Mexico in 1954. He performed a rotating internship in Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, CT. He privately practiced Medicine in Saltillo, Mexico before coming to San Antonio in 1963 where he continued private practice until 1993; specializing in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Serna was attending Physician to hundreds of children's births including 2 sets of natural triplets.
His professional associations included the National Headache Foundation, the American Association for the Study of Headache, the San Antonio OB/GYN Society, the Texas OB/GYN Society, the Texas Medical Association where he was a member of the 50-Year Club, the International College of Surgeons and the Bexar County Medical Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and her husband, Argelia Serna de Villarreal and Arnulfo Villarreal. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia S. Serna; his children, Carlos F. Serna, Jr. and wife, Tonya, Carmen Lamanna, and Victoria E. Rice and husband, Lawrence; grandchildren, Casey, Joseph and Jasmine Lamanna, Rebecca Rice, Sophia Rice; mother-in-law, Leticia R. Galindo; brother-in-law Daniel D. Saenz, D.D.S.; niece, Lorena Saenz; cousins, Argelia Rascón, Adrian and Mara Rahn, Ana Patricia and Ayhan Erden, Rosa Marta and Jorge Hurtado, Roland and Dharma Rodriguez, Paola and Jeff Merritt, and Andrea and Mike Engstrom and a host of other cousins and friends.
