
Carolina's grandfather, Martin Echtle, and his oldest son, Josef, immigrated to America in 1882. In 1883 Martin's wife, Karolina and their children arrived from Gengenbach, Baden, Germany, to find the father ill with yellow fever. The family settled in the La Coste and Castroville area where Josef raised his eight siblings before marrying Alvina Hutzler.
Lena entered Heaven on September 4, 2004 at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her parents Josef and Alvina Echtle; sisters, Maggie Sturm-Burell and Henrietta Minyard; brothers, Otto, Alfred and Joseph Echtle; husband, Capt. Carl Baumann, Sr. U.S. Army, Ret.; son, Elmer W. Baumann; grandson, Robert Hauschildt; sons-in-law, Herman Hauschildt, Sr. and Thomas Johnson; and daughter-in-law, Julietta Haupert Baumann.
Lena lived in San Antonio and was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church and Altar Society since 1947. She belonged to DAV Women's Auxiliary Post 5. Lena enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, and tatting pillowcases and tablecloths. She loved roses.
Lena is survived by her daughter, Cecilia Johnson of San Antonio; sons, Charles Baumann and wife, Lettie of Atascosa, Carl Baumann, Jr. and wife, Tommie of San Antonio, Clifford Baumann and wife, JoAnn of Hondo; and daughter, Carol Smith and husband, David of Bulverde. She has 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
