

Caroline Burns Jark, passed away October 16, 2002. She was born at Ft. Keogh, Miles City, Montana. Her: father, Col. Archibald Miller was an aviator of the Billy Mitchel era, and was one of the first Air Corps officers. He had just completed the National Air War College in Washington, D.C. when he was killed in a plane crash on Memorial Day, 1921. He had been awarded the Medal of Honor in 1909 by President Teddy Roosevelt. Her grandfather, Brig. Gen. Samuel Marmaduke Whitside founded Ft. Huachuca, Arizona when he was a Captain in 1877. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Burns, USAF, Ret. and Lt. Gen. Carl "Tiny" Jark, USA, Ret. Gen. Burns in his early days, was a member of The Three Turtles, a stunt team doing precision formation flying. They were the first team ever to perform slow rolls in formation in the P-5E in 1930. In May of 1943, he was assigned as Chief of Operations of the 8th Air Force fighter command in England. A year and a half later, he was made director of operations for the entire 8th Air Force. In July of 1958, he took over command of the 5th Air Force in Japan until he was re-assigned in 1961 as chairman of the Inter-American Defense Board in Washington, D.C. At the same time, he was appointed senior Air Force member of the Military Staff committee of the United Nations. His last duty station was as commander of Air Training Command 1963-64. Gen. Carl "Tiny" Jark, who was 6'5", spent his early military days in Artillery. His last duty assignment before retiring, was commander of 4th Army at Ft. Sam Houston. He and Caroline Jark were married 19 years until his death in 1984. She lived at the Army Residence Community since 1987. Her brother, LTC Wictside Miller, USA Ret., who was a West Point graduate, Class of 1929, in the horse cavalry, died in 1994 and is buried at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona. She is survived by two children, Marsha Burns Dupont and her husband, Louis A. Dupont; son, Robert W. Burns, Jr. of Universal City, TX; four grandchildren. Lt. Col. Thomas N. Glenn, Jr., Panama City, FL, Madeline L. Dupont of Toledo, OH, Caroline Burns Stout of Las Vegas, NV, Gwendolyn Miller Dupont of Kansas City, KS; four great-grandchildren, Casey Lynn Stout, Justin Albert Price, Kyle and Alyssa Glenn, niece, Janet Simkins and husband, Ron of Rancho Mirage, CA. Mrs. Jark will be buried along side of Gen. Burns in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Army Residence Community Fund or to the Fort Huachuca, Arizona Museum Society.
