Carolyn was born July 4, 1931 in Houston, Texas, the daughter of William Albert and Beatrice Odom Becker. She grew up in Galena Park, Texas and graduated from Baylor University in 1953 with a BA degree in elementary education. It was at Baylor where she met her husband of 67 years, Russell Newman.
Carolyn and Rusty were married in 1953 and both taught in public school for a year before moving to 28 years of adventure in the U.S. Air Force. They traveled to many fascinating destinations in the world and became friends with many wonderful people.
During this time, Carolyn continued to teach in second and third grades in such places as Colorado, Texas, and Virginia. She also taught LD classes in Virginia and was loved by many students.
After Rusty retired from the Air Force, they continued their travel adventures together with their daughter Kristin.
Music was a large part of Carolyn’s life. She was an accomplished pianist and organist and played for countless weddings. She had a rich alto voice and sang in numerous choirs. She was also a deacon in her church and served with distinction in that role. She went out of her way to care for many people. Carolyn loved life and lived it to the fullest. She loved Jesus Christ and now joins him in Heaven.
Carolyn is survived by her husband Col. Russell T. Newman (Ret. USAF); her daughter, Kristin Newman; Nephew Mark Hollis; Nieces Susan Garrett and Sybil Raney; many amazing, sweet cousins, great-nephews, great-nieces and remarkably special chosen family members.
Burial will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with a private family service.
A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held at a future date.
The family wishes to thank the Vista staff members at Blue Skies of Texas West for their excellent and loving care of Carolyn during the years she was there.
