Carolyn "Suzy" Sims

She was preceded in death by her beloved son, James David Sims.

She is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, David Sims; her daughters, Michelle Sims and Nicole Cano; her son-in-law, Joe Cano; her granddaughters, Sarah Nelson, Rebecca Cano, Leah Cano, and Julia Joynt; her grandsons, James Joynt, Joseph Cano, and Thomas Joynt; her grandchildren-in-law, Elliott Nelson, Ruth Cano, and Bew Joynt; and her cherished great-grandchildren, George and Faye Nelson and Tyler Joynt.

Suzy met the love of her life, David, in middle school and made sure no one else could steal his heart by marrying him the summer before his senior year. While David completed his degree in geology, she worked for the IRS, proudly supporting their young family. That partnership became the foundation for a lifetime of adventure. Throughout David's career in the oil and gas industry, Suzy happily chased him around the world as they made their home in nine different countries, embracing every adventure and forming lifelong friendships wherever life took them.

Throughout her life, Suzy exemplified the woman described in Proverbs 31. Her faith in God was the foundation of everything she did. She loved the Lord first, then devoted herself wholeheartedly to David, her children, and her grandchildren. No matter where in the world they lived, she faithfully served her church community by leading Bible studies, playing the piano for worship, opening her home to missionaries, and leading youth groups.

Suzy's joyful spirit and boundless energy overflowed into every aspect of her life. She had a passion for fitness and introduced rhythmic aerobics in many of the countries they called home, using her classes not only to encourage healthy living but also to build lasting friendships. Whether in the church, her aerobics classes, or everyday life, Suzy had a remarkable gift for encouraging women and pointing them toward Christ through both her words and the way she lived.

After decades of adventures around the world, Suzy and David returned to where it all began—San Antonio. In 1994, Suzy's greatest dream came true when she became "Memaw." After years of praying for grandchildren, God answered abundantly as seven grandchildren were born over the next seven years. She was present for the birth of every one of them, traveling wherever she was needed—from San Antonio and Austin to Lafayette and even Singapore. Memaw treasured every moment with her grandchildren, faithfully praying for each one every day, with a special day of the week dedicated to each grandchild. She filled their lives with love, laughter, faith, and unforgettable memories.

Retirement never slowed Suzy down. She continued serving the Lord by volunteering at her church and at Thomas Jefferson High School, where her love story with David had first begun. She was always ready to lend a hand, encourage someone who needed it, or jump into a new adventure. Even in her seventies, she could be found riding ATVs, zip-lining, snorkeling, kayaking, skiing, ice skating, biking, tubing, walking marathons, riding elephants, traveling, and rarely saying no to an opportunity to try something new. Her joy for life was contagious, and she inspired those around her to embrace each day with faith, courage, and a sense of adventure.

Suzy, Mom, Memaw will be deeply missed every day. We find comfort knowing she is dancing in heaven with Jesus, reunited with her beloved son, James, and the many dogs she loved along the way.
