

Carroll Edward Mace, Ph.D., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 23 in the company of his beloved adopted family, Eduardo Miranda and sons Edward and Christian, and dear friends. Born in Neosho, MO, he graduated from Drury College and received his Ph.D. from Tulane University in 1965. He taught Spanish and Spanish literature at the University of South Carolina, Newcomb College and for 34 years at Xavier University of Louisiana. A devoted teacher and diligent scholar, teaching and research were at the center of his life. He loved his students, many of whom followed him in advanced language studies. A respected authority on Guatemalan folk theater, he published several books and numerous articles, his most prominent book, Two Spanish-Quiche Dance Dramas of Rabinal in 1970. He retired in 1998. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rector Tolle Mace and Beatrice Dunkeson Mace and a brother, Dean Mace. He is survived by a sister-in-law, a niece and nephew, and devoted Miranda family. A memorial mass at Xavier University in New Orleans will be held at Drexel Chapel at noon on October 2nd and at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in San Antonio at 3pm on Friday, October 2nd.
