

She was born November 15, 1930, the youngest child of Ethel and William Smith of Yonkers, New York. She attended PS #7, Benjamin Franklin Junior High School and Charles E. Gorton High School. She received her RN Degree from Rockland State Hospital School of Nursing in Orangeburg, NY and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1955 from Columbia University, New York City.
Lt. Col. Smith joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1954 under the RN student program as a second lieutenant. She served at William Beaumont Army Hospital, Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, and the US Army Hospital in Camp Zama, Japan. She received her Master's Degree in Nursing from Columbia University in 1966 and Doctor of Education Degree in 1970 from Columbia University.
Following graduation, she was stationed at US Walzem Army Hospital, Fort Dix, New Jersey and later as Chief Nurse of the 43rd Surgical Hospital in Korea. Assigned as Special Projects Officer in the office of the Surgeon General in Washington, D.C., she later became Chief of Professional Development for the Army Nurse Corps.
Following retirement in 1976, she joined the faculty of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center School of Nursing at San Antonio, teaching administration in the graduate nursing program until her retirement as an Associate Professor in 1994.
Dr. Smith was a published author in her professional field and later undertook writing fiction, short stories and humor. She was a member of the Austin Writer's League, San Antonio Writer's Guild and the Corpus Christi Byliners. Several of her stories were published and she won awards in writing contests.
Dr. Smith fulfilled her lifelong dream of traveling, including cruises to Alaska, Montreal, the Panama Canal, Mayan ruins in Cozumel and Belize, Cabo San Lucas and the Virgin Islands.
Dr. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ethel Smith; sister, Ethel Mary; brother, William C.; and long time companion of 25 years, Dr. Rosemary McKevitt.
Dr. Smith is survived by her companion; Gloria Acosta; niece, Jean Donovan; nephew, Butch Smith (Lynette); grand-nieces, Erin Smith, Meagan Smith, Kathryn Liddell, Bridget Liddell, Maria Donovan; grand-nephews, Charles Liddell and Patrick Donovan.
Dr. Smith will be sorely missed by colleagues, friends and former students.
