Our amazing husband, father, and grandfather left this world on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 and now is held in the arms of Jesus, his Savior. He was born May 9, 1937 in Bowie, Texas to Cyrus Walter (Scotty) Burson and Ann Naomi Mathews Burson. He lived a full and adventurous life as a boy and graduated from Jefferson High School along with his brothers, Paul and Curtis Burson. He proudly served in the US Navy. He married Thelma Jo Redmon on February 23, 1963. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1964 with a degree in Business Administration. He worked for a short time in Oklahoma but got back to Texas as soon as he could! He worked for Volkswagen of America Regional Office for many years before retiring to spend more time with his sweetheart. Together, they went on many adventures all over the United States. Throughout the years, he was an incredible father to Ken, Gaye, and Jeri. As a father, he took us on boat rides and taught us to water ski, but also gave the most effective spanking/lecture combination for something as simple as arguing with each other in church. He cheered on his Longhorn Football team win or lose. He loved to hunt and fish. When grandchildren came along, he became one who cheered them on in their sporting events and played a pretty good Barbie horse for his grand girls. Every Easter, he and Meemaw hid Easter eggs (very well) and he rigged up the piñata from the highest oak tree in the backyard. No Christmas morning was complete without his reading of Luke 2. No present was opened before that reading. The grandkids even acted out the story as he read one year. We cherish that tradition and will honor it with special tenderness this year.
He is survived by his loving wife, Thelma, son Ken Burson with Deb, daughter Gaye Morris with husband Shane, and daughter Jeri May with husband Monroe. He is also survived by grandchildren Devin Kleinfelder, Kaitlin Willett, Kelby Bellows, Courtney May, Caroline May, and Monroe May, Jr.
He is preceded in death by both of his parents, one brother Curtis Burson, and his granddaughter, McKenzie May.
A private service will be held for the family.
Instead of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in his memory to Alzheimer’s Association or Embrace Hospice.
