Charles “Charlie” lived a life defined by curiosity, devotion, and warmth. He built a remarkable career that spanned both science and technology, working as a pharmacist and later as a computer and network engineer—fields that reflected his sharp intellect and lifelong love of learning. His profession as a defense contractor took him to United States Air Force bases all over the globe.
Above all, Charlie cherished family and relationships. He shared 22 loving years of marriage with his beloved wife, Susan Andrews Carden, who was his constant companion and greatest joy. Together, they created countless memories, especially during vacations to their favorite Cas Abou beach in Curaçao, a place Charlie held close to his heart. An avid scuba diver, he found peace and wonder beneath the waves, “blowing bubbles.”
Charlie deeply valued time spent with friends and was known for his kindness, loyalty, humor, and easygoing spirit. He was also an animal lover who adored his dogs, with special bonds shared with his faithful Irish Wolfhound, Celtie; his rescued terrier, Mabel; and Lacey, the wolfhound who loved the world; all passed. Most recently, Herrington and Luna filled his heart on daily walks in the neighborhood, charming dear neighbors and meeting their children and dogs.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents. In addition to his wife, Susan, Charlie leaves behind a brother, Bob, in Oklahoma; brother, James (Anita) in Roanoke VA; nephew, William; and nephew, Jeffery. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Steve (Paulette) Milewski; nephew, Alek (Autumn) Milewski; and his great-nephew, Koda Milewski.
Charles will be remembered for his intelligence, adventurous spirit, gentle humor, and the love he gave so freely to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, friendship, and quiet generosity that will be missed by all who knew him.
His wife will receive friends for a memorial visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 N. Loop 1604 E.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Animal Defense League of San Antonio.
