

Charles Bennett Myler, born Harry Charles Myler, died at his home on Wednesday, June 7, 2006. He was born in Marshall, Texas, on September 3, 1926, to Harlan Ackley Myler and Ernestine McGilvray Myler.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Josephine Perkins Myler, and his children Mark, Madeline, Malcolm and his wife, Toni. Papa also has four grandchildren: Harlan Benjamin Cassel and Joanne Michelle, Charles Andrew and Catherine Grace Myler.
Charlie volunteered at seventeen to join the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served honorably in the Pacific as a sailor on a troop transport. His tour of duty on the USS Elkhart took him to places such as the Marshall Islands, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, China and Pearl Harbor.
Charlie attended Pasadena Playhouse and the University of Texas where he earned his Bachelors, Masters, and PhD in fine arts. He taught at Burbank High School briefly in the 50's, and then began his tenure as a professor at St. Mary's University in 1958 until he retired in 1991.
Charlie, also known as "Doc", founded the Shoestring Players drama group and was a charter member and faculty advisor for the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Both organizations were very dear to him. For many years he was the Speech and Drama Department Chairman as well as Faculty Senate representative.
Charlie, a long-time member of St. David's Episcopal Church, was a Lay Reader. For over 10 years, he celebrated Morning Prayer on Sundays for the residents of The Inn at Los Patios retirement community. He also led the Children's Chapel services at St. David's Episcopal School for several years.
Charlie was a member of The San Antonio Speech Arts Association, Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of the Republic of Texas, and also a member and past president of the San Antonio Historical Association.
