He was born on May 22, 1930 in Fredericksburg, Texas to Albert and Barbara Petri. He grew up with his four brothers and sister, speaking only German until first grade. He loved baseball and was a fine athlete, and continued playing throughout his twenties in a semi-pro baseball league. He married his wife of sixty-four years in 1952, raised seven children, and ran a successful small business for twenty-seven years.
He owned Super Serve icehouse on the corner of Oblate and McCullough; everyone in the neighborhood traded at "Petri's". He was a well-known pillar of the community and was incredibly generous to his neighbors. He had natural business acumen and read the Wall Street Journal and Barron's regularly throughout his life. He was a true self-made man and had an unfailing work ethic.
Charlie never met a stranger; he had a quick wit, a great sense of humor and loved working with people. He was a simple and humble man who cherished his family and was a great provider for his wife, children and grandchildren. As a self-taught man, he highly valued education, and passed these values on to his family. He was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for over 50 years and sent all his children to Catholic schools.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings and his granddaughter, Jessie Willhelm.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Petri; children, Charles Petri, Jr., Joan Stone, Marianne Petri, Tom Petri (Anna), Joe Petri (Dennis Jarosh), Jim Petri, Cathy Darilek (Ron); grandchildren, Belinda Jordan (Dave), Matthew Petri, Christine Powell (Clay), Ryan Darilek, and Alyssa Garza (Luis).
