COLONEL (Ret) CHARLES J. (CHARLIE) REDDY, 88, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2021 at Brooke Army Medical Center. He was preceded in death by Eileen, his loving wife of 66 years; his parents, Jerry & Melissa Reddy; and his sisters Geraldine Burns and Doris Reynolds. He is survived by his children, David (Diane), Steven and Linda; brother Edward; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Charlie was born in Kings Park, NY on January 3, 1933. He joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1958 and completed a 30-year distinguished career, retiring in 1988. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Omaha in 1966 and graduate degree in Health Care Administration from the U.S. Army Baylor University Program in 1972.
Charlie had a variety of experiences during his Army Nursing career ranging from clinical practice, to education and administration. His performance led to early selection of increasing responsibilities to include Chief, Nursing Anesthesia section, Nurse Methods Analyst - Tripler Army Medical Center, Deputy Chief Nurse Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Chief Nurse Health Services Command and Nursing Administration Consultant to the Army Surgeon General. His final assignment on active duty was Chief Nursing Division, HQ Joint Military Medical Command, Randolph Air Force Base.
He was awarded numerous military awards to include The Legion of Merit (1 0LC), Meritorious Service Medal (1 0LC) and Army Commendation Medal in recognition of his leadership abilities. He was particularly proud and grateful to have the Col. Charles J. Reddy Junior Officers Leadership Course named in his honor. The course was instituted in 1992 to promote junior officers leadership development and he regularly attended and participated in the course. He was widely recognized as a generous and thoughtful mentor by many throughout his military career.
Charlie was a life long sports fan, with a particular affinity for golf, Notre Dame football and St. Louis Cardinals baseball. He was also a devoted parishioner at St. Pius X Catholic Church for many years.
The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff of BAMC for the outstanding care provided to our father over the last 25 years.
A funeral Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church and burial at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will be held at a later date in the near future.
