

Charles Dulaney Schutz, devoted husband and father, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 25, 2010. He was born on May 22, 1918 in El Paso, TX. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio and Texas A & M University. He then entered active military duty on July 5, 1940 in the 12th Field Artillery, 2nd Infantry Division. He commanded “B” Battery 12th Field Artillery landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. After a breakthrough at the Battle of St. Lo, he suffered a severe head wound on July 30th. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Charles was employed by Standard Oil Company of Texas as a Petroleum Engineer and by Forest Oil Corp. as it’s South Texas District Engineer. Following 6 years as a consulting petroleum engineer, he joined National Bank of Commerce of San Antonio where he helped organize its Oil Loan Department. He retired as Executive Vice-President and Senior Petroleum Engineer in 1983.
He was a member of numerous professional and social organizations including Society of Petroleum Engineers, Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers, Texas Society of Professional Engineers, American Petroleum Institute of which he was chairman of the South Texas Chapter and chairman of the Southern District receiving commendation. He was also a member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, Texas Mid Continent Oil and Gas Association, Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association and the American Institute of Banking. He enjoyed his membership in the San Antonio Country Club and spent many hours with his friends on the golf course. He was also a member of the Petroleum Club and the San Antonio German Club.
He was a supportive member at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for 50 years. After his marriage to Ella Rilling, he transferred to First Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 54 years, Lillian Street Schutz; brother, Joe Schutz; and sister, Barbara Ladd.
Charles is survived by his second wife, Ella Taylor Schutz & her 3 children; his twin brother, Albert Dulaney Schutz & his wife Sue. Charles is also survived by his 2 daughters, Lynn Schutz Mims & her husband Con and Dianne Schutz Reser & her husband Ralph; 5 grandchildren, Darrell Torgerson & his wife Chris, Jeff Torgerson & his wife Vicki of Austin, Kristen Shannon & her husband Sam, Catherine Reser and Michael Reser . He had 7 great-grandchildren, Kathleen Torgerson, Matthew Torgerson, Brooke Torgerson, Elizabeth Torgerson, Grace Torgerson, Hannah Shannon and Graham Shannon.
Those who loved and admired Charles remember him as putting others first, praying diligently each day with the assurance of Eternal Life with Jesus as his Savior.
Visitation will be 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 28th at Sunset Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 29th at First Presbyterian Church, 404 North Alamo. The family Graveside Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park.
Honorary pallbearers will be Darrell Torgerson, Jeff Torgerson, Michael Reser, Con Mims, Richard Schutz and Hall Hammond.
The family expresses their appreciation for the love and care given by Jane Ross, Ruth Diaz, Arturo Gomez, Margie Benavidez and Lily Rosales.
In lieu of flowers of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Charity of one’s choice.
