Charles J. Steitle passed away on November 21, 2010 at the age of 90. Son of August and Estella Steitle, he was born and lived in San Antonio. He graduated from Edison High School in 1937 and played half-back at St Mary's Univ. He was a pilot during WWII in the China-Burma-India Theater of operations flying gasoline from Jorhat, India over the Himalayas (the Hump) to Kunming, China earning him the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was Chief Appraiser with FHA and later Chief of Technical Services Division for the HUD program, until his retirement in 1981 after 26 years.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Birda. Surviving him are daughter and son-in law, JoAnn Kneer and Don L. Smith, son and daughter-in-law David and Nita Steitle, and 2 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 27, 2010 from 1PM to 2PM at Sunset Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2PM with entombment to follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
