Christopher Kelsay Edwards, known affectionately as Rascal to Tara, Chris to all who knew him and Squid to a very fortunate few, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas, due to natural causes. Born on December 8, 1970, at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, Chris lived a life marked by dedication, joy and a warmth that touched everyone he knew. His 54 years were filled with the love of his family, the pride of a distinguished military career and the pursuit of knowledge and adventure.
Chris's journey began as the beloved son of Tommy and Patti Edwards, whose memory he cherished after their passing. He was a devoted husband to Tara and a proud father to his daughter, Kelsay and son, Patrick. His family circle included his in-laws Barrie and Katie Springer, sister-in-law Dawn Hayes-Dennis and her husband Jim Dennis, nephew Trip Hayes, and sister Janet Reha, along with his niece Jennifer Reha. Each relationship was nurtured with, humor, kindness and an unending support that defined Chris's role within his family.
Education was a cornerstone of Chris's life. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of North Texas and later a Master of Science in Personal Finance from Golden Gate University. His quest for knowledge was paralleled only by his commitment to service. Chris retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force, where his career was nothing short of remarkable. His time with the 9th Space Warning Squadron, Office of Space Launch, and the National Reconnaissance Office Ops Squadron were highlighted by numerous accolades, including Company Grade Officer of the Quarter and Year, Field Grade Officer of the Quarter and the NRO Medal of Superior Performance. At HQ USAF A3/5 and the Air Force Departmental Requirements Office, he was recognized as Officer of the Quarter and he concluded his career with the 24th Air Force in Space Cyber Operations. Rest assured, Chris was who you wanted to see on console under his black Stetson on launch day. No one was more calm, cool or collected.
Chris expressed his values through his actions and interactions with others. His intelligence, kindness and wit were the pillars upon which he built his life and influenced those around him. Chris was an avid scuba diver and runner, finding joy and tranquility in both the depths of the sea and the rhythm of the pavement beneath his feet. But perhaps his most cherished role was that of Team Dad, where he ensured every child heard their name cheered during competitions, creating an atmosphere of inclusion and encouragement. He was always ready to shout a time split mid-race, whether you wanted to hear it or not and everyone in the stadium heard his signature "WHEELS" when the win was within grasp.
Chris's love for science fiction was not just a pastime but a reflection of his forward-thinking and imaginative spirit. He found solace and excitement in the pages of other worlds, which often mirrored his optimistic outlook on the future and the possibilities it held. If you ever discussed Star Trek with him, you know how passionate he was about possibility.
In his passing, Christopher Kelsay Edwards leaves behind a legacy of love, service and laughter. His life was one that exemplified the best of what it means to be compassionate and engaged in the world. Chris's memory will be treasured and kept alive in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him and were forever changed by his gentle strength and unwavering integrity. He will be deeply missed, but the stories of his humor, kindness and wit will continue to inspire and comfort all who remember him.
