

Clay was born in Mercer, Kentucky on August 20, 1920, a coal mining city in northwestern Kentucky. He lived in a farming area during his early childhood.
Clay enlisted in the Army just prior to World War II. During his tenure in the service he served with the 80th Field Artillery and Signal Corp overseas and later with the Medical Field Service School of Brooke Army Medical Center Fort Sam Houston and William Beaumont Hospital in Fort Bliss, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1952 as Sgt. 1st Class.
Clay was a manager with Securities Investment Company in various cities in Texas. He retired in 1985 from Associates Financial Services, a subsidiary of Gulf and Western Corporation of New York. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed bowling and gardening. He was married to Eleanor Heinz for 60 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sister and two sons.
He leaves his wife Eleanor Hammonds; daughter Sharon Morris and husband Dr. David Morris of Austin; son Marty Hammonds and wife Sharon of San Antonio; daughter-in-law Janie Hammonds of Boerne; 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church for over 50 years where he served on the Board of Elders, Chairman of the Board of Education and also served in other capacities.
