

Clemence C. Barstow, age 90, MSG (Retired) U.S. Army, passed away peacefully at home with his family on Saturday, July 2, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on December 11, 1920 in Mahnomen, Minnesota to Ellsworth & Delia Barstow. Clemence enlisted the U.S. Army on October 1940. During his tour of duties, he was stationed in North Africa and Italy during World War II and he served three tours of duty in Korea. Clemence retired as a MSG in March of 1971. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8541, member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp. After retirement from the U.S. Army, he was employed by the State of Texas at the San Antonio State Hospital from April 1972 until his retirement in May 1986. Survivors include his wife, Frances L. Barstow; children, Leona Ann Barstow, Bonnie Mae Barstow, Clemence Barstow Jr. and Sandra Lee Simon; grandchildren, Michael Ryan Cushman, Brett Cushman, Ginger Simon and William Simon; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Ella and Stratton; sisters, Viva La Batte and Vera Dziuk; and brother, Charles Barstow. Visitation will take place from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2011 with full military honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
