

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleofas Vargas Sr. and Porfiria Mata Vargas; sister, Eleanor Puchot; brothers: Paul, Porfirio, Gabriel, Henry, George and Robert Vargas.
He is survived by his children: Robert A. Vargas and wife, Hilda; Julia Ann Vargas and Gilbert Vargas and wife, Kathleen; eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; brothers: Antonio, Eddie and Raymond Vargas; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
During WWII, he served in the Army Air Corps as a Flight Maintenance Gunner assigned to a B-25 Bomber Group. He served in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theaters. He received citations and decorations for PO Valley, Air Combat Balkans, Air Medal with four Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters for 47 air missions, and three Bronze Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal and one Overseas Service Bar.
He was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Legion of Honor with the Alzafar Shrine.
He was a master electrician and worked at the Pearl Brewery for many years. After retirement, he was the owner of "El Tesoro Bar" in downtown San Antonio.
