

He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, San Antonio in 1935. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Gas Engineering from Texas A & I College in Kingsville, TX, and his Master of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management from Oklahoma State University.
He served with the 9th Army Air Force in Europe during World War II as an Aviation Ordnance Officer with the rank of Captain.
He was a member of Manor Baptist Church in San Antonio for approximately 28 years, where he served as Deacon for about 24 years. After moving to Austin in 1992, he became a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
He was a licensed professional Engineer, life member of both Texas and National Societies of Professional Engineers, and life member of Texas Teachers Association. During his long career in the fields of teaching and engineering, he taught at Jefferson High School, his Alma Mater, retired from San Antonio College in 1981 and then was self-employed as a consulting engineer for several years prior to his retirement to Austin.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Freida Tutschke Murphy, December 5, 2002; son, Captain Alfred Walker Murphy, US Army, June 1967, in Vietnam; parents, Frank and Ida Murphy; and sister, Evva Lee Jones. Survivors include his niece, Sheila Gail Dr. Earl Gully of Mobile, Alabama; nephew, Paul Franklin Kathleen Jones of Bastrop, TX; and other relatives.
