Growing up in West Texas as a child, Coda and her family experienced many hardships. At age 10, Coda “drove” a horse and buggy to school taking her younger siblings along, while picking up other children along the way. She later moved with her family to the Rio Grande Valley where she was graduated from Harlingen High School.
Coda married Donald Snowden in 1941. They made their home in San Antonio for most of their 64 years of marriage. Coda worked at Alamo Heights Junior School serving as administrative assistant to the principal for 20 years. When interviewed by the Jr. High newspaper prior to her retirement, she called her time there, “the wonderful years.”
Throughout their years in San Antonio, Coda and her family were life-long members of Trinity Baptist Church. She was always grateful for the opportunities her children experienced there. Coda loved working with preschoolers each Sunday for 30 years. Upon retirement, Coda and Don remained in San Antonio serving and fellowshipping with the XYZ seniors at Trinity. Some of her closest friendships were made there. She also spent 20 years volunteering weekly at Northeast Baptist Hospital.
In 2012, Coda moved to the Dallas area to be close to family.
Coda was preceded in death by husband, Donald L. Snowden, brothers Jack McElhannon, W.C. McElhannon, and sister Jane Conklin.
She is survived by her son Dr. Toby (Ellen) Snowden of Midlothian; daughter Dru (Mark) Childs of Waco; Grandchildren Christine Snowden, Jimmy Don Snowden, Mary Helen Snowden, Amy Metcalf and Colton Childs, and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home Monday, April 22 from 5-7. Interment will be Tuesday, April 23 at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery at 9:30, with a celebration of life service following at 11:00 at Trinity Baptist Church Thrift Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in her memory be made to either South Texas Children’s Home Ministries or The Legacy Fund at High Pointe Baptist Church Cedar Hill, Texas. An additional memorial service will be held 2:00 Saturday, April 27 at High Pointe Baptist Church, Cedar Hill Texas.
