Cornelia Verburg Barlow

Mrs. Cornelia “Corie” Verburg Barlow, age 92, passed away on March 19, 2021 to be with her husband, Col. Raymon “Buzz” Barlow in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. Corie was born on November 14, 1928 to the late Cornelia and Lambertus Verburg in Santa Ana, California. She was the 6th of 10 siblings. She graduated in 1946 as Valedictorian of her high School class and attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA. She married her soul mate, Buzz, after he graduated from West Point in 1949. They were married for just over 61 years. Buzz passed away in 2011.

She was a devoted daughter, a wife, a Mom, a grandmother (Nanya), a great-grandmother and a friend to many. She was a devoted volunteer as a 20+ year member of the San Antonio Assistance League during which time she was awarded the Ada Laughlin Award. She loved anything to do with sewing and playing the piano and organ, having played for many school and church functions. Her sewing and needlework were legendary, including smocking and French hand sewing. She would often share her knowledge and skills with anyone who was willing to learn. She Co-chaired the church sewing circle making clothes for children.

Corie is survived by her daughter, Karen Ford (husband George) and her son, Buzz Barlow (wife Shaaron). Also, her granddaughters Amy Ford Freiermuth (husband Mark), Melanie Ford McKinley (husband Seth), Ashleigh Ford, Tori Barlow Rubinson (husband Adam), her grandsons Clay Barlow and Michael Barlow (wife Savannah). And her great-grandchildren Chase Freiermuth, Lexie Freiermuth, Caleb McKinley, Hannah McKinley, Anais Davis, Sami Rubinson, Ben Rubinson and John Rubinson. She is preceded in death by 5 siblings – Jennie Hoffman, Burt Verburg, Henry Verburg, Marie Blackburn, Agnus Patton, and John Verburg and is survived by her sisters Elsie Janney, Helen Holdren and Margaret Moran. She was also preceded in death by John Barlow, her brother-in-law, and survived by Lolete Barlow, her sister-in-law.

The family will receive visitors at Porter Loring North on Saturday, April 3, 2021 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
