Cynthia Eileen Simpson, a beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully surrounded by the ones she laughed with, lived for, and loved on October 6, 2020 at the age of 52.
She was born May 9, 1968, at Andrews AFB in Maryland to loving parents, James and Laura (Williams) Hawkins.
Born into a military family, Cynthia grew up in Spain and in San Antonio, Texas where she became actively involved in her community. Her journey serving the community included helping to feed and shelter hundreds of people relocated to the Alamo Dome following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina that left thousands homeless.
Cynthia was a multi-sport athlete, excelling in track & field and a perennial all-star in softball at Columbia Pony League. Taking after her father, she would also go on to be the head coach of her son's T-Ball team later in life.
She was a brilliant scholar and student. She attended and graduated from OW Holmes High School on May 31, 1986.
With her talents, she earned a scholarship and attended the United States Air Force Academy (USAF) Preparatory School from July 16, 1986 to July 17, 1989. Upon completion of Preparatory School, she was appointed to USAF Academy Cadet status where she attended the USAF Academy in Colorado from June 30, 1987 to July 17, 1989. She was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1994 and returned to her hometown of San Antonio, Texas.
Following the completion of military service, Cynthia’s desire to further her education led her to Southwest Texas State University where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. After graduating, Cynthia spent her spare time volunteering to tutor students in math, helping others to achieve.
Those who knew her learned she always placed everyone else’s needs before her own. She loved her family deeply. She would travel to attend family gatherings and support all the family celebrations from births to birthdays, weddings and family reunions, to everything else in between.
From a shy young girl to a beautiful woman, Cynthia was joined in marriage to James Simpson on November 18, 2007, and moved to Montgomery, Alabama where she lived for 13 years before passing. From this union, Dezmond their son was born.
Cynthia volunteered regularly in Montgomery. Within the Montgomery Public School System, she served as a substitute teacher, librarian, and math tutor. She also tutored foreign students from Korea learning the English language for the first time. She also helped schools put on fun events for kids, including back-to-school bashes, fall festivals, and Christmas parties. If the school asked for a volunteer, Cynthia was always the first to respond!
Cynthia was loved by everyone she met in Montgomery. Friends and neighbors would always comment on how warm and loving her spirit was - on how beautiful her smile was. Her smile, well it would brighten anyone's day. Her hug was not just any hug either, but one that let you know she genuinely loved you. And if you needed someone to listen to, she did so with a very empathetic heart. Cynthia was special!
She was preceded in death by her Mother and Father. She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted husband, James Simpson; son, Dezmond Simpson; sister, Cass Hawkins; brothers, Jimmie and Tony Hawkins; along with many other in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Cynthia will always be remembered as an exceedingly kind and generous wife, mother, and friend. She will truly be missed!
Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow,
but remember me in every tomorrow.
Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles,
I've only gone to rest a little while.
Although my leaving causes pain and grief,
my going has eased my hurt and given me relief.
So dry your eyes and remember me,
not as I am now, but as I used to be.
Because, I will remember you all
and look on with a smile.
Understand, in your hearts,
I've only gone to rest a little while.
As long as I have the love of each of you,
I can live my life in the hearts of all of you.
