Daniel A. San Miguel was born to Daniel San Miguel, Jr. and Isabel Aguilar. He attended Mt. Sacred Heart Catholic School, Woodlawn Elementary, Horace Mann Jr. High, and Thomas Jefferson High School. Following in his dad’s footsteps, he enlisted in the Army after graduation. Dan was a natural athlete playing CYO, Pop Warner, and Little League baseball, football and track. He was an excellent dancer, fantastic bowler and enjoyed family gatherings most of all.
Daniel was the second child of Daniel and “Belle” with sister Leticia born 18 months earlier, followed by sisters Annabelle and Rosanne and little brother Roland. He grew up in a very close San Miguel family where his first cousins, Gloria, Robert, Sylvia, and Cynthia lived around the block and were more like brothers and sisters. The “San Miguels” all went to the same schools, the same church, played outside together all day long, and were in all the same activities. As a teenager, Dan was the delivery boy for the family drugstore, La Botica Guadalupana located in what is now Market Square. He was adored by his grandparents Roy and Lupita Aguilar and Daniel and Velia San Miguel. He was greatly influenced by his dad’s only brother, Robert, who managed the drugstore. He also was a favorite of the maternal aunts and uncles, especially Nicolas Estrada who would spend hours sharing his WWII stories with Dan.
He made friends easily, smiled readily, laughed at everyone’s attempted jokes, and believed that each person he encountered deserved another shot.
He fell in love with a beautiful young woman who was working for KWEX, Chanel 41, the nation’s first Spanish language tv station. Amada Montalvo completely filed his heart and when they married at San Fernando Cathedral, it was the happiest day of his life ....until twins Adriana and Daniel IV arrived.
It wasn’t an easy pregnancy. Amanda was diagnosed with Lupus, suffered greatly and was a dialysis patient for over a dozen years before she passed. Dan never remarried.
Life wasn’t always a pleasant garden as Dan battled alcoholism for many years. He later was overjoyed to learn of another daughter, Angela , meeting her for the first time when she was a teenager.
Dan was most of all a loving son and adored his mother Belle, insisting on visiting her one last time before going to the emergency room. He deeply cared for his step-mom Barbara San Miguel and was so grateful for the unconditional love of his Aunt Mary Lou.
Dan was the happiest in the presence of his brothers and sisters, his nieces and nephews and all the babies. He relished each family celebration.... birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, graduations and was often the first to comfort at the loss of a loved one.
He will be greatly missed by his siblings and their spouses, Leticia and Pete Van de Putte, Annabelle and Orlando Garcia, Rosanne and John Valenzuela, Roland and Cindy San Miguel. “ Uncle Buddy “ was cherished by his nieces and nephews, Dr Nichole Van de Putte (Jason Stiles) and their children Julian, Jove and Marlo, Vanessa Van de Putte ( Hugo Sulaica) and son Hugo III, Henry Van de Putte (Rena) and their twins Camila and Henry IV, Gregory Van de Putte and children Asher, Elliott, Claire and Coy, Isabella Van de Putte(Todd Boyar), Paul Van de Putte( Sarah Stultz), Andrea Gonzales, Yvonne Valenzuela and daughter Rosey ,and nephews Moses, Brian, Timmy, and Sean Valenzuela, and Juan Rolando and Alejandro San Miguel.
Dan passed away despite the valiant efforts of the cardiac team at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital. At the time of his passing, he was at peace and ready to join those he loved in God’s Heavenly Kingdom.
Serving as Pallbearers are Gregory Van de Putte, nephew, Robert San Miguel Jr, cousin, Richard Esquivel, cousin, Rene Estrada, cousin, Louie Hidalgo, uncle, and Roy Acevedo, lifelong friend.
