Daniel Mark Monroe of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on September 17, 2026. Dan was known for his doting adoration of his loved ones, his passion for music, his craftsmanship, and his enduring athleticism. He delighted everyone in his presence with kindness and humor.
Dan, the youngest of four siblings, was born in Houston on March 6, 1955, to John and JoAnn Monroe. His father was a World War II veteran, and his mother was of Indigenous Ponca heritage. Together, his parents founded Monroe & Associates, Inc., a successful food brokerage that became the family business. Dan, most of his siblings, and several of their spouses carried on their parents’ legacy by working there and raising the next generation on adjoining properties they called “The Family Compound.”
A gifted athlete, Dan earned a golf scholarship to Texas State University, but a traumatic hand injury cut his college career short. He overcame the injury, going on to become a 12-time champion at the Dominion Country Club, where he was a founding member. He was also the all-time leading free throw shooter in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church Men’s Basketball league, which he organized for over 30 years.
In addition to his business career, Dan enjoyed “spinning records” at the Crystal Pistol, a popular local nightclub. He was a skilled builder, gardener, and painter, earning local recognition for both his landscaping and his artwork.
He was a reserved man who often expressed himself through the music he played, the gardens he tended, and the care he put into everything he made. He lavished praise on his children and took immense pride in their accomplishments. Through their shared love of athletics, he taught them respect and integrity.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, John and JoAnn Monroe. He is survived by his children, Shannon Upshaw (Ross), Christopher Monroe (Kate-Frost), and Tanner Monroe (Allie); his grandchildren, Cohen, Weston, Stone, Ella-Kate, Dylan and Emma; his partner, Sandy East, her children and grandchildren; and his siblings, Jo Lynn Powell (Richard†), Robert Monroe (Gail), and Kathy Harding (John).
A sunset service in remembrance of Dan’s life will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday September 30th on the 18th fairway at the Dominion Country Club. After the service, the immediate family will depart for a private gathering.
Dan co-founded and served as president of the Dominion Men’s Golf Association (DMGA), a 501(c)(3) devoted to community improvement. Those wishing to honor his memory may donate to the DMGA, Central Catholic High School, Holy Spirit Catholic School, Antonian College Preparatory High School, or The American Heart Association.
