David Vance Baird was born in Shelby, Nebraska on August 4, 1940, to Faye Roberts Baird and Hugh Vance Baird. He spent his childhood in Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa, even capturing the eye of a Life Magazine photographer during pee wee football at age ten.
David earned a BA in History at Midland Lutheran College and a Master of Philosophy degree at the University of Kansas. He moved to New York City in 1975 where he met Barbara while trying to master the NYC subway system. They lived in Manhattan for 25 years where David enjoyed all the city had to offer including the Metropolitan Opera, Central Park and shopping in Chinatown. He greatly enjoyed their trips to the Caribbean, Europe and Mexico.
Moving to San Antonio in 2002, David enjoyed exploring the Hill Country, BBQ, Mexican food and trade days. His passion became rescuing, rehoming and adopting abandoned dogs. His happy place was walking his rescue dogs in Dreamland.
He is preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Scott Baird. He is survived by and will be dearly missed by his wife, Barbara Davis Baird; daughter, Elizabeth Halsey; grandsons, Mason Moore and Conner Aldridge; brothers, Bob Baird and Ray Baird (Marti); sister, Ann Townsend; numerous nieces and nephews, friends far and wide, and by his two loyal canine companions.
