David Robert Coggins

He was a true Southern gentleman born on a farm in New Prospect, South Carolina on March 10, 1923. A member of America's greatest generation, David fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Silver Star for bravery in combat. He graduated from Clemson University after the war and went on to a 32 year career in the Air Force retiring as a Colonel in 1974.

Owner of two Masters Degrees, David later played a pivotal role developing North Padre Island as President of the Padre Island Investment Corporation. He was a husband, father, grandfather, pilot, boat captain, teacher, writer, world traveler, reader of books, lover of life, and war hero.

For over thirty years, David belonged to the Rotary Club, the San Antonio Power Squadron, the Daedalians and vigorously supported Clemson University.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Myrtle Brian.

David is survived by son David and his wife, Wendy and their children, David III and Sarah; son Brian; son Barry and his wife, Laurie; and son Bill and his wife, Angel and their children, Cody, Casey, Chelsea, and Christian. He was a man of stellar character and integrity who touched the lives of all who knew him and left this world a better place. He will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
