Dr. David Augustin Garcia, 59, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on June 29, 2026. Born November 23, 1966, David lived a life defined by steadfast service, quiet excellence, and a deep respect for the dignity of every person he met.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Father David F. Garcia and Mother Mirta Garcia, and his sister Teresa Garcia. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Valenzuela Garcia, and his son, David Anthony Garcia; two sisters; and brothers John Joseph and Christopher, who loved and admired him. The family was also blessed with his mother-in-law and siblings through marriage, Beatrice G. Guerrero, Patricia Tovar, and Stephen Tovar.
David’s commitment to learning and to the calling of medicine shaped the course of his life. He earned a BA in Biology, Cum Laude, from St. Mary’s University, and pursued medical education through Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Medicine and UT Health Science Center San Antonio School of Medicine.
In his professional life, David served with distinction as Chief of Internal Medicine at North Central Baptist Hospital, Chief of Staff at North Central Baptist Hospital, and Chief of Medical Endoscopy at North Central Baptist Hospital. He received the WB Russ MD award for outstanding service and dedication to North Central Baptist Hospital. Licensed in multiple states to practice Gastroenterology, David was respected for his skill and leadership and was loved by his staff and colleagues for the steadiness, care, and integrity he brought to every day.
Above all, David will be remembered for the lives he touched through his work and his presence. Countless people remember how he saved their family members’ lives, and many more will remember the way he insisted on the best care possible—never rushed, never indifferent, always attentive. He took time to talk with his patients, making people feel seen and heard, and he carried himself with a warmth that put others at ease. Those closest to him will also remember the unmistakable sound of his laugh and the joy that accompanied it.
Outside of medicine, David found delight in the simple and the shared. He enjoyed travelling, was a devoted Trekkie, and treasured watching Marvel movies with his son. At home, he and his wife spent many evenings binge-watching Netflix shows together. He also enjoyed cooking and took cooking classes in his spare time, approaching the kitchen with the same care and curiosity that marked the rest of his life.
A Celebration of David’s Life will be held at Sunset North Funeral Home, 910 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas 78232, on July 8, 2026, at 5:00 pm. The family invites guests to stay following the ceremony for a catered reception.
