David Kirk Hoffman of Austin, Texas was born to Alonso (Buck) Oden Love Jr and Jane Devenport in El Paso, Texas on September 28, 1970. Jane remarried to Charles Richard Hoffman in 1974 and Kirk was adopted.
Kirk attended high school at Wrekin College in Shropshire, England. He then attended the University of Texas, Austin and received his B.A. in Government and International Studies in 1993.
Kirk worked for many years at Basils restaurant and was a critical part of the soul of that legendary establishment. He also worked in a number of positions in the financial, legal, and lobbying industries. Notably, Kirk worked for years with the Austin-based Texas Civil Rights Project and was very proud of this. He was a lifelong champion of people whom he saw as underprivileged or put upon.
In 1998, Kirk entered the U.S. Navy Reserve where he served as a Petty Officer Third Class in a Space and Naval Warfare Unit.
Kirk is preceded in death by his mother Jane Hoffman and his older brother Rodney (Rowdy) Lee Love Hoffman, whom he dearly loved and admired as his role model and his protector in life. Kirk is survived by his sister-in-law Deanna Hoffman, his nephew Hunter Hoffman, and his father, Charles Hoffman.
Kirk was an immensely generous person. His apartment was known as the Hoffman Hotel because it was always open to friends and strangers for an overnight stay or much longer stays for people without a home at the time. Many people resided at the Hoffman Hotel in the 1990s and wouldnt imagine Austin Texas without it. He not only provided a place to sleep but provided food and drink as well as any other needed assistance. He gave away more than one car to people who needed one, did free legal work for many people, bailed people out of jail, and used his incredible ability to navigate difficult situations and systems to help many people out of problematic situations. He did all this while living on a small budget from his own labour. He gave more than he took from the world.
Kirk had an outsized personality and no one who met him forgot him and most loved him. Outside of his professional life he was a doctor, a lawyer, an actor, a lender, a world traveler, an explorer, a raconteur, a playboy, an embellisher, a pot stirrer, a cowboy, a restaurant critic, a gift giver, a baby sitter, an answerer of all questions, a knower of things he couldnt possibly know, an instigator, a man of his own creation, and an unwavering friend.
