On February 4th, 2023, David William Johnsen loving husband and father of three children, went to be with Jesus his Lord and Savior at the age of 75. He died in his home surrounded by his family after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.
David “Skip” was born May 29th, 1947, in Jersey City, N.J. to Theodore and Irene Johnsen. From his humble beginnings, Skip worked hard and pursued his education with the help of the GI bill from his Navy service (3 1/2 years) in Vietnam. While working full time at Western Union (7 years), Skip received his B.A. from Rutgers University.
Skip experienced an “act of God” after a friend was inexplicably healed from kidney disease when Skip anointed her with oil from Oral Roberts University. He felt God’s leading and went to Tulsa to pursue his MBA and meet his future wife Edie. He later continued his pursuit of education and received his PhD from Saint Louis University in 1991. Skip worked for the telephone company for over 32 years starting at SBC in Saint Louis and continuing to AT&T here in San Antonio.
Skip was a life-long learner and enjoyed his 2nd career as Marketing Professor at UTSA (University of Texas San Antonio) for almost 19 years.
On July 23, 1977, he married his devoted partner, Edith Jacobsen. Together they raised three wonderful children: Julia, Joey, and Jeffrey.
Skip had a passion for hunting sports and family camping in their motor home. He had a talent in fixing computers for his family, friends, and neighbors. He was never too busy to help a struggling student or friend with a computer virus etc. He loved discussing technology with his computer-savvy children.
Church family has always been important to Skip and Edie. After all, it seemed like a miracle that a New Jersey boy would meet a California girl in the middle of the country (Tulsa, Oklahoma). Together they raised their family to be God-loving as they experienced Sunday School, Awana’s , church youth groups, and Bible studies.
Skip was preceded in death by his father, (Theodore), and his mother (Irene), and his sister (Karen). He is survived by his wife (Edith), his three children, (Julia, Joey and Jeffrey), his brother (Glen), sister (Laura), and several nieces and nephews.
We will hold a 30-minute service at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery for his military service in the Navy. This will be held at 10:00am sharp, and after this brief service we will hold a Celebration of Life service at River City Community Church. This will begin at 12:00pm, with a reception to follow.
