With a wife, two daughters, and two granddaughters, Mike was surrounded by women in his life and loved every minute of it. He barely batted an eye with all the outlandish conversations he was dragged into. He loved them all with a fierceness and a pride every wife, daughter, and granddaughter deserves.
Mike was a country boy at heart, and grew up spending time outdoors with his Pappa, fishing, gardening, and learning how to drive on the country roads. That love of the outdoors never left him, and some of his favorite times were at the family ranch, fishing and sitting on the porch talking.
An avid hater of roller coasters, Mike was still a thrill-seeker at heart. Whether it was riding bulls, volunteering with the Bexar County Fire Department, or poking at brush piles, his love of adventure inevitably led him to his life calling. In 1972, he joined the San Antonio Fire Department, where he spent 30 years in service to the people of the city before retiring in 2002. The bonds he developed throughout his career and life became unbreakable friendships that turned into family. In his spare time, Mike loved traveling to Disney World as often as possible, taking cruises, being a surrogate father to his daughters friends, pretending he didnt like cats, woodworking, and writing.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law Peggy Bartholomew. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Janis Klein; daughters, Deborah Mena and husband Danny and Carrie Klein; granddaughters, Grace and Alena Mena; sister, Patricia Boroughs and husband Tom; brother, Rick Klein; nephew Scott Boroughs and wife Monica, and niece Lisa Brink and husband Justin; father-in-law, Harvey Bartholomew; his Maine Coon companion, Copper; as well as a lifetime of friends and brothers in the San Antonio Fire Department.
