David Ellsworth Liu, also known as Dave or Number One Son (his name for himself) made his unexpected exit on March 20, 2024, at the age of 69, quietly in San Antonio, Texas. Born on December 15, 1954, in Ft. Hood, Texas, David packed the essence of Texas-sized humor into every corner of his life.
A true conversationalist, David never met a topic he couldn’t spin into a yarn, often leaving his audience in stitches. His laughter was infectious, his wit was as sharp as a tack, and his puns... well, they were "pun-ishingly" brilliant. He was a man who could find the lighter side of even the darkest moments and was a reminder that life is too short not to laugh.
David's formative years were spent at Sam Houston High School, where he graduated in 1972. He made life-long friendships and will be dearly missed by those friends. After high school, David joined the Navy as a proud seaman, collecting stories and friends at his favorite assignments in Puerto Rico and Adak, Alaska. Post-Navy, David shifted gears to become an accomplished long and short haul trucker. He was a dreamer and schemer, always plotting his next big adventure or business idea while navigating the open roads.
David's siblings - brothers John (and his wife Cindy), Darryl (and his wife Liz), Steve (and his wife Marie), and sisters Darlene, and Cathy Liu Scott (and her husband Lamar) - often found themselves in David's detailed retelling of family histories. His nieces and nephews - Meilani, Andrew, William, Mallory, Brooke, Scott, Ashlee, Amber, Anthony, Sarah, Zachry, and Catlin - were his captive audience and the next generation of pun appreciators.
David was married and divorced twice. Though his last marriage to Li Xia did not last, their friendship and loyalty continued to the end of his life. David's ability to find humor in the everyday didn't diminish with the trials of life, but rather, it grew stronger, much like the legacy he leaves behind.
Generous to a fault, David's intelligence was only surpassed by his friendliness. He loved nothing more than to engage in spirited discussions, dive into the latest blockbuster movie or send the latest crazy, funny meme he found online.Though David's journey on this earth has come to an end, his spirit remains with us delivering joy and laughter. Remember David not with sadness but with a chuckle and a shake of the head at his audacious ways. Although David never said this that we know of, it sounds like he might have: "Life is like a truck ride; it's not about the destination, but the hilarious pit stops you make along the way.”
