Mack was born in Charleston, South Carolina, to Joseph David McCormack and Irene Lenora Farris Lanier. After his parents’ divorce, his mother remarried Bob Lanier, and the family moved to San Antonio, Texas, where Mack grew up and built his life.
He graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1958 and attended North Texas State University and San Antonio College. An avid tennis player, Mack played college tennis at North Texas State University. He had a passion for fast cars and even raced his beloved 1956 Chevy. Known for being highly organized and detail-oriented, Mack believed in learning by doing, and much of what he knew came from experience, persistence, and a natural talent for planning, building, and design.
In 1959, Mack began a 38-year career with City Public Service (now CPS Energy), serving as a planner, construction coordinator, and project manager. He was known for his dedication, integrity, and pride in a job well done. Alongside his career, Mack spent decades as an architectural draftsman and home designer. He helped turn client ideas into their dream homes, while also buying destressed properties and remodeling them into beautiful homes for the family to live in.
On September 7, 1963, after considerable effort, persistent courtship, and a bit of luck, Mack convinced the love of his life, Mary, to marry him—a decision he never stopped being grateful for. Their marriage of more than 62 years was built on loyalty, faith, and unwavering love. Together, they raised their children Matt and Julie, creating a home defined by care, consistency, and devotion. The family was deeply rooted in their Catholic faith, rarely missing Sunday Mass or Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
Mack loved creating fun family experiences by customizing family vans for road trips across the U.S.—with stays in Pensacola, Florida; visiting family in Charleston, South Carolina; and zig-zagging Colorado, New Mexico, and California. Weekend and holiday visits to the family lake house on Lake LBJ included spending time with close friends and enjoying water sports on one of his favorite toys, the Cobalt boat. After retirement, he and Mary enjoyed annual trips to Beaver Creek, Colorado, Marco Island, Florida, and multiple Cruise Ship expeditions with friends.
Energetic and playful, Mack loved playing golf, dancing, joking – being the life of the party. He cherished Friday lunches with his best friend, Robert Roten. During his final two years, he lived with Mary at Belmont Village Senior Living Lakeway Memory Care, where staff remember him as “one of the most enjoyable residents they have known.”
Mack is survived by his beloved wife, Mary McCormack; his son Matt McCormack and his wife Lindsay McCormack; his daughter Julie Boyd and her husband Bryan Boyd; and his grandchildren McKenzie McCormack, Dawson Boyd, and Vaughn Boyd.
There will be a memorial to celebrate Mack and his remarkable life. Funeral services and burial, with a reception following, will be at Sunset Memorial Park & Funeral Home at 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, on February 16 at 1:00 pm.
Mack’s legacy is one of energy, devotion, faith, meticulous care, and joy—a life well lived, full of laughter, love, and cherished memories.
